I am the Dean of Science and a Professor of Microbiology at RMIT University having served previously as the Acting/Interim Dean of Science and beforehand as the Associate Dean of Student Experience (Science) and as the Associate Dean of the Biosciences and Food Technology Discipline. My research interests are in (molecular) environmental microbiology and environmental (including water) science and includes a focus on investigating the impact of human pollution and activities upon natural and urban ecosystems and, in turn, how microbial activities and processes respond to and can mitigate impacts of this pollution. I have authored around 100 research articles, reviews and book chapters and I am the lead author of a book on Molecular Microbial Ecology. My research has been cited over 14,000 times with an h' index of 54My teaching activities have included courses on microbiology, immunology, genetics, biotechnology, molecular biology, ecology and Sustainable Development in STEM and I have placed emphasis on applied, experiential and digital learning and on the development of both technical and professional skills for my students and their application across disciplinary and multi-disciplinary contexts.I have 25 years experience as a university academic across five universities (in the UK and now in Australia), providing diverse and varying perspectives and experience in higher education. I am a graduate of the University of Liverpool (Ph.D.) and University of Sheffield (BSc. Special Honours).
