About Michael Mccann

I am Associate Dean for Intellectual Life, founding Director of the Sports and Entertainment Law Institute and a tenured Professor of Law at UNH Franklin Pierce School of Law. I am also a Visiting Professor of Law at Harvard Law School, where I teach in the Graduate Program.I served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs from 2017-19. I teach sports law, employment law, influencer law and intellectual property law courses. In 2020, I created the first NIL course offered in law schools. I also created an IP and antitrust law course at UFC in Las Vegas and the Deflategate course.I've won the Professor the Year Award and have authored more than 25 law review articles published in the Yale Law Journal, Boston College Law Review and other journals.Along with former NBA player Ed O'Bannon, I co-authored "Court Justice: The Inside Story of My Battle against the NCAA" (Diversion Books, 2018). I'm the Editor and Co-Author of "The Oxford Handbook of American Sports Law" (Oxford University Press, 2018). In 2021, I testified as an expert witness before the U.S. Senate in a hearing that included NCAA president Mark Emmert and centered on NIL reforms. I've appeared as a legal expert on The Today Show, Good Morning America, Katie Couric and other national TV programs. I was also a legal expert in the movie Four Games in Fall and CNN’s Downward Spiral: Inside the Case Against Aaron Hernandez. In 2020, I joined Sportico, which is published by Rolling Stone and Variety's publisher, Penske Media, and have authored more than 1,000 stories. From 2007 to 2020, I authored more than 1,000 stories for Sports Illustrated. I was the first journalist to interview Lance Armstrong after Armstrong’s interview with Oprah Winfrey. I met Armstrong at his home in Texas and authored “My Dance With Lance” (Sports Illustrated, 5/11/2013 issue). The International Business Times named me one of the “11 Entrepreneurs, Marketers, and Coaches to Follow” in 2021 and The Aspen Institute named me one of the 50 people to follow in 2021. Along with Harvard Law School Professor Jon Hanson, I co-founded The Project on Law and Mind Sciences at Harvard Law School. Hanson and I were recipients of the 2011 Media Prize awarded by the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. I served on the legal team for college football star Maurice Clarett's NFL eligibility lawsuit. Clarett v. NFL remains one of the most important cases in sports law history.I practice law in Massachusetts and hold degrees from Harvard Law School, University of Virginia School of Law and Georgetown University.
