About Prof Ioanna Nixon
Hello, my name is Ioanna Nixon and I am a Cancer Specialist, an Academic,an Educator, and a Coach. I am the Clinical Director Oncology.NHS GGC. I specialise in soft tissue and bone sarcomas, GIST, and Clinical Innovations. I am a Professor at Business School Strathclyde University, and an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer in Medical School Glasgow University. I am also the Cancer Innovation Lead at WOS Innovation Hub.My leadership journey started in 2015, when I became the Clinical Lead for the Scottish Sarcoma Network to drive improvement, research and innovation across Scotland. This National Leadership role led to a nomination for the BMJ awards in 2020, and fuelled my interest about leadership, leading to more academic work on clinical leadership and the decision to become a certified Coach.Since 2015 I have served in many National and International Leadership roles, as the NCRI (National Cancer Research Institute) Chair for Head&Neck epidemiology and survivorship, member of the New Drugs Committee for the Scottish Medicine Consortium. I am currently a Board member of the British Sarcoma Group and Cancer Throat Foundation Trust, and co-Chair for the Regional Quality Improvement Group, as I am also Vice President for the Hellenic Paediatric and Young Adults Committee aiming at improving health and wellbeing of children, teenagers and young adults in Greece. I have been awarded a PhD in Radiotherapy, a Master in Public Health/Epidemiology (MPH),Liverpool University and trained in Quality Improvement and Safety through the Scottish Quality and Safety(SQS) Fellowship. My passion for holistic patient care led to training in Applied Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice with the Institute of Functional Medicine in USA.My work in promoting compassionate, person-centered care has been awarded with a Fellowship by Faculty of Management and Leadership (FMLM), and an Honorary FRCR fellowship from the Royal College of Radiologists(RCR). I am Founder of JackNDrBetty, and Wee Leaders Hub jackndrbetty.com created during COVID-19 to explain the pandemic to children. My projects involve Co-design with kids, families and schools to support children’s wellbeing. I am Founder of “The Empower Clinic”, a coaching service by doctors, where we combine medical knowledge, and coaching skills to support people with chronic disease, including cancer feel empowered and in control. Consultant Oncologist
CurrentI am a Consultant Oncologist Specialising in Soft Tissue and Bone Sarcomas, GISTs and Head and Neck Cancers. I offer radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapy as indicated for these cancers. I am the Lead for the Scottish Sarcoma Network, Lead for the National Sarcoma MDT and the Regional Quality Improvement and Safety co-Lead. I also served as the Chair for the National Cancer Research Institute(NCRI) Head and Neck Epidemiology and Survivorship CSG and as a member of the New Drug Committee(SMC). I am also an Advisory Board member of the British Sarcoma Group and a member of the NCRI Sarcoma CSG. I hold developmental roles as an educational supervisor for junior doctors and specialty trainees in oncology and an appraiser for NHS Consultants. I am also an academic mentor for PhD students and a mentor in National Leadership Programmes, including the Scottish Improvement Leader’s programme by NES. I have a PhD in radiotherapy, an MPH(Epidemiology) and am a Scottish Quality Improvement Fellow. In 2018 I was awarded as Founding FMLM Fellow for compassionate leadership and improvements to patient care. In 2021 as Honorary FRCR for my contribution to patients and oncology. My team has been finalists for the BMJ awards 2020 and HSJ Partnership awards 2021. I am devoted to person-centered care and passionate about clinical innovations.
