I have been researching and teaching on energy policy, low carbon technologies, decentralised energy system and energy modelling for more than 25 years.I have been Professor of Energy and Environmental Systems at the Centre for Environment and Sustainability (CES), University of Surrey, UK since 2007; from July 2019 I went part time at Surrey, and became an independent consultant/researcher for 80% of my time. From July 2024 I became an Emeritus professor at Surrey: I will continue to supervise PhDs, undertake some teaching and contribute to occasional projects. My main activity is now consulting.My consulting focus is on 'Modern Energy Cooking Services', a £39.8 million programme funded by FCDO and led by Loughborough University, GAMOS and the World Bank’s Energy Sector Management Assistance Programme (ESMAP). MECS aims to accelerate the transition from biomass (wood/charcoal) based cooking to modern, clean, low carbon energy-efficient alternative methods that utilise renewable sources of electricity such as solar photovoltaic systems and biogas.
