I am Peter Schwarz and I’m Professor for Prevention and Care of diabetes mellitus at the Medical Faculty Carl Gustav Carus at the Technical University Dresden. Recently I became the President of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). IDF consists of 242 professional and patient member organisations - all of them being dedicated to improving the quality of diabetes care worldwide.Currently we undergo a disruptive change of diabetes care worldwide. I some regions of the world the prevalence of diabetes explodes, and the outbreak of diabetes seems to be more aggressive than in the past. The change of our lifestyle is the main determinant of this new diabetes expression. On the other hand, there are new developments of digitalization and smart health reaching people directly into their pocket. This can be used to enable new and targeted early prevention, education and treatment strategies. There's also an development of new diabetes drugs but also new exciting therapeutic strategies like fasting as part of diabetes prevention and care. But what are the challenges? Asking the colleagues and patients worldwide the answer is always: education for patients and physician but also: prevention, prevention, prevention. Another challenge is accessibility and availability of diabetes care which varies a lot worldwide - equalisation of access to care becomes an ultimate goal.As President of IDF I want to develop this organisation to be the global leader in diabetes and a powerful voice for people with diabetes. The primary objective is addressing the need of people with diabetes varying between Bangladesh, Finland, Surinam and Nigeria. With the activities I'm planning for the next years I want - 1st to be in the pocket of every diabetes patient worldwide, - 2nd to be in the head of every healthcare politician worldwide and - 3rd to be in the heart of every healthcare professional treating people with diabetes worldwideTo achieve this goal several existing and new projects will form a network strategy to raise awareness and advocacy for people with diabetes and modern and innovative therapeutic and preventive strategies. Every one of you is invited to join IDF as individual member or fellow of IDF as healthcare professional to form a global community of advocates to improve the quality of diabetes care. As president of IDF I will have an open ear, eye and heart to the need of people with diabetes and will use all my knowledge, enthusiasm, passion and motivation to develop with all partners global strategies to improve quality of diabetes care worldwide.
