The Drone Academy is a free, week-long summer program for 9th-12th graders offered by the Southern Research STEM Education Outreach Team. Through hands-on UAV construction, flying exercises, and experimentation, students gain the skills needed to compete in today’s drone-centric world. The coursework combines engineering design and construction, 3D printing, and the application of electrical engineering principles.

UAB Solution Studios™ aims to accelerate the translation of clinical innovation to the benefit of multiple patient populations. This goal is accomplished by bringing clinicians and STEM students into UAB Solution Studios™, a digital workspace where teams are formed to collaborate and develop solutions to unsolved clinical problems. The Presidential Innovation Fellowship funded 5 students to participate in an intensive summer program in which they worked on a Solution Studios problem. • Led project management for the fellowship, which included organizing clinical shadowing, lectures, off-campus events, and demo day.• Guided students through the discovery, design, and development process, providing presentations and mentorship. • Managed relationships and communications with external and internal stakeholders.• Participated in the 10-week UAB Commercialization Accelerator program, an entrepreneurial training program that guides students through customer discovery, business model canvas, sales and marketing, legal, and other elements of starting a company.

My project was investigating the effects of tensile force on breast cancer cell gene expression, protein production, and exosome concentration.• Performed experiments involving cell culture, flow cytometry, and a Flexcell Tension system.• Analyzed data and contributed to writing a scientific paper published in Nature Laboratory Investigations.
