Rod Cavazos (RXC) is a type designer, educator, and artist based in San Francisco. His work is guided by a deep affinity for letterforms and symbols, and written language as a whole.As Principal at PSY/OPS (1995+) and Type Design Lead at T26, Inc. (2008+), Cavazos has designed corporate typefaces for a sterling roster of clients: Chevrolet, Harley-Davidson, Hulu, Meta, Medium, Docusign, Fitbit, Electronic Arts, Activision Blizzard, Amazon, Samsung, Google, Turner Broadcasting, CANAL+, Madonna / Maverick Records, Dr. Seuss Enterprises, Motorola, and dozens of others. He was commissioned by the US Forest Service to standardize and visually optimize the icon systems used in their cartography and park signage.He has taught Type Design at California College of the Arts since 2006; has taught in the Type West program at Letterform Archive; and spoken and led workshops at universities, corporate venues, and design events (Adobe XD Week, Stanford d.school, California Academy of Sciences, Typo SF, SFSU, +).His work has appeared in numerous publications over the years, including 'Emigre' magazine, 'Typographic Sketchbooks' by Steven Heller, 'Just My Type' by Simon Garfield, and the '365 Typography Calendar' by Studio Hinrichs. He has juried numerous type and design competitions, and written about variable typography for Microsoft.Cavazos' lifelong interest in game design has also factored into his creative practice. He and his staff designed and published the iOS game Alphabuild to strong acclaim, including as Parenting magazine’s App of the Week. He originated Bitblox, a decorative toy set selected for inclusion in the SF MOMA Museum Store and featured on Laughing Squid, Quipsologies, Trendhunter, Boing Boing, +.His experimental letter-play projects have included Lyrical, a sonic interpretation of the alphabet that allows for musically-encoded information transfer; Chainletters, a system of typeforms that interlock seamlessly to form tangible text structures; and Letraplex, a tabletop game with strategy driven by the shape attributes of letters.In 2018 he formalized his vision for playable sculptures in a manifesto called the Exhedral Promulgation, and in 2022 began teaching Xenoludology, an interdisciplinary course based on it. He was invited to teach in the Game Arts program at CCA in 2024; and has originated the Visual Design for Games course, set to debut in 2025.
