Responsibilities included utility tariff optimization and negotiations with utilities for new rate designs and line extensions, yielding tens of millions of dollars in annual CAPEX and operational cost savings. Managed Tesla’s Energy policy and regulatory initiatives. Tasks included providing expert testimony and comments in regulatory and legislative proceedings regarding utility rate design, line extensions, distributed energy resources, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.Led Tesla’s engagement with electric utilities across all product verticals, including collaboration opportunities for charging and energy infrastructure development, and interconnection/grid upgrade reforms. Analyzed electricity markets, energy and infrastructure policies to determine opportunities and risks for Tesla’s products. Developed strategies, positions, talking points and advocacy campaigns for the company.

The analysis was used to determine the value proposition of DER for customers, and to help formulate policy recommendations. I provided expert testimony in utility regulatory proceedings including rate cases, grid modernization and distributed generation programs.

Developed and coordinated KAPSARC's "Utility of the Future" research program. The research is examining changes in electricity systems around the world arising from new technologies, regulations, and shifting consumer preferences. New utility business models and regulatory structures are being investigated.Prior to leading the "Utility of the Future" Program, I investigated the drivers of energy productivity changes across nearly forty countries, including the United States, Australia, Canada, EU nations, Brazil, China and India. The project quantified changes in energy productivity due to changes in the structure of economies, and sectoral energy efficiency using decomposition, multivariate and econometric analyses. Additionally, I developed a novel perspective about energy productivity which is outlined in a KAPSARC discussion paper, "The Case for Energy Productivity: It's not Just Semantics".Additional contributions include developing research proposals, training fellow researchers about electricity planning and markets, coordinating workshops, and spearheading KAPSARC's internship program.

Led the Foundation’s analytical assessments of commercial and policy mechanisms that promote the use of natural gas, renewables and energy efficiency. Projects included developing ideas for reducing price risk in the electric sector, identifying coal power plants ripe for retirement or fuel switching, evaluating market conditions for natural gas vehicles, and writing comments for state and FERC regulatory filings. Managed external consultants and collaboration with external groups. Presented ideas, and electricity and gas market updates to state energy regulators at NARUC meetings. Additionally, managed the State Regulatory Outreach Program to inform regulators about market issues and opportunities.

Led the development and communication of quantitative environmental policy analysis to create generation strategies to comply with MATS, CSAPR, proposed carbon regulations, and other standards. Additionally, I conducted economic analysis to determine which power plants to build, retire, retrofit, or fuel-switch. The analysis was the foundation for long - term strategic generation plans, ranging in length from one year to thirty years. I collaborated with various departments to develop the strategic plans to mitigate risks, capitalize on opportunities, and ultimately minimize costs to customers while preserving reliable service. I developed new analytical methods and computer models to evaluate generation options. One model is capable of evaluating over 100 units across dozens of scenarios to determine each unit's value and whether the units should be retired and replaced. I developed and promoted a new planning approach that focused on least-risk generation plans rather than least-cost given the extensive uncertainties in energy markets and the economy. Other duties included maintaining environmental capital budgets, supporting regulatory filings, and identifying industry trends through market research. Also evaluated potential merger and acquisition targets. I spent a year as a System Planning Analyst developing 30-year integrated resource plans for Southern Company’s retail electric utilities. Projects included scenario analyses, and completing economic screening analyses of prospective generation technologies. Provided analysis for state regulatory filings such as unit certifications and integrated resource plans. Additionally, I completed a five-day training course at Southern Company's Real-time Operations & Trading desks, and am experienced with utility finance, revenue requirements and rate-making.
