About Paul Raff

2021 - present: Staff Data Scientist at Reddit, helping to bring community and belonging to everyone in the world. I focus on Search, Feeds, and Experimentation, and vigorously mentor and guide numerous Data Scientists.2020 - 2021: Principal Data Scientist at Aetna, working on simple and effective ways to achieve optimal health outcomes for chronic diseases. Was Data and Machine Learning owner for the best-selling next-generation Transform Diabetes Care product: https://payorsolutions.cvshealth.com/insights/next-generation-transform-diabetes-care. Guided and directed 10 Data Scientists and Engineers.2012 - 2020: I helped grow Microsoft's Analysis and Experimentation team (i.e. ExP) from ~20 to ~150 while progressing to a Principal Data Scientist Lead, managing a group of 10. Collectively, we successfully transformed a large portion of Microsoft's business units to a high maturity level in A/B Experimentation, enabling them to accelerate innovation via trustworthy online experiments. I also had a stint as a Principal Program Manager Lead.2010 - 2012: I was an OR Scientist in the Supply Chain Optimization team at Amazon.com, developing novel, realistic mathematical models to achieve maximum performance of the Amazon supply chain. My insights and ideas have turned into an estimated $25MM savings (based on the size of Amazon's supply chain in 2012!) in shipping and operating costs.Above all, however, I'm a mentor and a teacher. I look for common themes for our group, and optimize them. I never turn anyone away who comes for help. I'm only successful if those I work with are successful. Before Amazon, I received my PhD in Mathematics at Rutgers University, working under the direction of Doron Zeilberger. My main research topics concerned computer-generated proofs. Improvements derived from the insights of myself and my colleagues have resulted in massive user satisfaction gains.Working on the general problem of understanding data *at scale*. As we move beyond Bing and to the rest of Microsoft with our data-driven culture and ability to extract insight from the data, it's important to be able to take a new data set and be able to automatically understand what the semantic meaning of the data set is with minimal human intervention. Implemented programs and systems that provide the ability to summarize and inspect new data sets.Leading design and implementation of experimentation summarization effort.Evangelizing the data-driven culture and constantly preaching the need to not only produce data, but the meaning within the data.

Oct 2012 - Jan 2014

Operations Research Scientist

Seattle, Wa, Us

Developing practical solutions for an immense supply chain. Trading off exact solutions to approximate models for approximate solutions to exact models. Giving expert, precise analysis of issues facing the largest retail supply chain on a daily basis. Was the driving force behind multiple fulfillment optimization solutions, enabling millions of dollars of savings in an already heavily-optimized supply chain setting. Turned real problems into abstract ones, solved the abstract ones, and then applied the abstract solutions into real solutions.Specifically, created the prototype and theoretical solution for real-time global optimization of order fulfillment, which led the move away from greedy fulfillment and realized cost savings of $80MM/year. Collaborated with other applied researcher colleagues and software developers from the whole supply chain stack to bring to production.
