About Pubarun Basu
Pubarun Basu is a 23 year old photographer based in Kolkata, India. Following the footsteps of his father, he has indulged into the world of creative arts from the tender age of 4. Pubarun made it to the Forbes 30 under 30 Asia 2022 -The Arts list. He was declared as the "Youth Photographer of the Year'' in the Sony World Photography Awards 2021 - organized by the World Photography Organization, making him the first Indian to win this title. His work has been published by international organizations such as National Geographic, Forbes, The Guardian, BBC, CNN, Rolling Stone, GQ, Vanity Fair, and more. His picture has appeared on the cover page of The Telegraph. Pubarun’s photographs have been exhibited around the globe in countries like France, Italy, Japan, UK, and US. Recently, Pubarun was selected as a delegate in the Rare with Google Leadership Academy and the Harvard Project for Asian and International Relations. He was the recipient of the M.P. Birla Award for Excellence in Co-Curricular Activities 2019. He has been awarded the CCRT National Scholarship from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. Pubarun’s work has encompassed themes of environmental conservation, connecting the stories of resilience of indigenous communities with their intangible heritage. In his long-term project on the river Ganga, recently supported by National Geographic Society and The Nature Conservancy, Pubarun has documented the bond of spirituality that connects the river to its inhabitants, while also addressing the underlying realities of slow violence due to systematic human-led catastrophes that have transformed rural migrants into climate refugees. One of his photos from the documentation got exhibited at the United Nations Headquarters in Dec 23. Subsequently, Pubarun has travelled to remote areas of India in search of stories about indigenous communities and their ancient traditional roots that bring them closer to nature. He was awarded the Indica Cultural Photography Grant 2021 to develop his project on the Wangala festival of the Garo community. Pubarun has created "Dhara" - an impact storytelling youth-led project creating awareness through local stories of water. Through various innovative initiatives such as "The Photo-Inclusion Project", Pubarun has made efforts to create an inclusive space where art can transgress any social boundary. He believes that every aspiring artist holds the power to bring about a significant change through their medium.
