Serendipity. That’s the word to describe my professional journey. When computer training was the flavour of the month in India, I didn’t quite feel the need to learn how to use it. And then, just like that one day, I landed a job with NIIT as an “Instructional Designer”. My first project was to design training material on the topic INTEGRATING MS WINDOWS NT WITH NOVEL NETWARE. So, from teaching Political Science to Grades 11 and 12, I moved to teaching IT stuff to working professionals. From using blackboard and chalk, I moved to using the computer and mouse. From teaching face-to-face, I moved on to teaching through computers and the Internet! Then, Instructional Design became a “thing”. It gained popularity in K-12 and Higher Education, and now, vocational training. Fortunately, I got an opportunity to work in all these domains, and even in the area of special needs. A project that I am extremely proud of as an instructional design expert is the design of English Communication Skills program for the hearing impaired to help them gain employment.When all my colleagues were moving up the hierarchy chain, I convinced my bosses and the companies that I worked with to allow me to stay put - because I love to design learning material, and I always thought I didn’t have the appetite to manage people and projects. Well, as they say - never say never. So here I am running my own firm, ID Mentors, and now I do manage people and projects. As a company our endeavor is to empower teachers, trainers and instructional designers to “serve content just right!” Come, join us in this journey to make folks fall in love with teaching & learning!
