From 1999 to 2008, served as Managing Director in Applied Materials’ Corporate Business Development Group. Applied Materials ( NASDAQ: AMAT) with a market capitalization of over $17 billion, is the global leader in providing innovative equipment, services and software to the semiconductor, flat panel display and solar photovoltaic industries . Joined Applied Materials to help build the firm’s Corporate Development and M&A capabilities conceptualizing and executing M&A transactions between $10 million and $2 billion in total enterprise value. Aside from buy-side activities Jim led a number of important sell-side divestiture assignments, joint ventures, venture investments, IP licensing and other partnering transactions.

Led all project management efforts for capital projects in Saudi Arabia and Singapore including the determination of the projects’ strategic fit, scope, technology selections, capital investments, economic returns/risks, product sales plans, tax optimization, and financing alternatives. Managed valuation analysis, negotiations and due diligence assessment for the for a $50MM capital project in Saudi Arabia. Led direct negotiations with raw material supplier to increase feedstock for an existing Chevron joint venture. Final agreement with supplier modeled as a “win-win” for both parties. Additional net cashflows estimated at $10MM/year to Chevron.

Led all the analytical support, economic evaluations, and financing arrangements associated with a $650MM Saudi Arabian petrochemical project (a breakthrough project for Chevron).Drafted bank loan prospectus, and led the negotiating team for project financing ($450MM deal), successfully placing the debt with local, regional, and international lenders. Banks gave high marks to the quality of package and professional nature of presentations. All-in financing costs generated over 1.5% savings per year versus current best deal in market..

Created the strategic and business planning, accounting, financial analysis and administrative activities for a new operating division and coordinated activities with Chevron Chemical and Chevron Corporation staff groups. Initiated and directed the financial analysis for various acquisition activities, providing support to the Manager of Business Development and Acquisition. Acted as lead manager and negotiator for the successful divestiture of a division business unit ($10 million in sales).
