I was heavily involved at this site in upgrading MVS software for Year 2000 readiness project, for multiple clients. The software upgrades included base OS/390 and OEM software products. The duties also involved problem resolutions and MVS support responsibilities. These outsourced clients run a variety of OS/390 systems with a diverse range of software. The position involved projects such as installation of TCPIP and SMTP mail server. While in this position I developed strategies to implement and distribute MVS software across multiple systems. I installed the Control-M job-scheduling package and also assisted Production Control staff with configuration and management of this product. I have actively involved in special projects such as the MVS webserver, Unix System Services and Linux on S/390, and more recently joined a development team for cross-system automation and console message integration..

I was involved in developing software for Hitachi Data Systems R&D in the HiStore project. HiStore is a DASD management tool for large MVS systems.This project involved tasks ranging from program design using the Hoskyns PRISM design methodology to Program construction using both IBM/MVS Assembler and SAS/C languages. Assembler programs used many complex MVS/ESA services and macro's such as Subsystem Interface, ENF listeners, Cross-Memory services and ESTAEs. Duties also included Program Packaging and customer support of HiStore.

I provided technical support for three MVS machines running under VM/XA for a DP bureau. The support role covered areas such as software maintenance, DASD configuration, performance & tuning, operations support, user registration, RACF administration as well as problem diagnosis. The problem diagnosis and resolution role included problem tracking, calling product suppliers and ordering & applying fixes. I gained experience in the use of running hosts under VM. I was also required to supply management reports for capacity planning. The team I worked with was small and as a result I was frequently required to take responsiblity for major tasks (such as MVS CBPDO level upgrades) with little supervision.

My main task was upgrading MVS software including installation and regular maintenance and customisation. The MVS hosts ran under a VM/XA environment, which was used as an operating platform. Whitbread used mostly SMP/E for receiving and applying maintenance and researching fixes. Products I specialised in were: TLMS, FDR/ABR and DCMS and I also upgraded: SAS, CA-OPTIMIZER, JARS-SMF. My role encompassed user support and problem determination and resolution. This included calling software product suppliers for fixes and upgrades
System Software Support
My work focused on providing system support for application programmers and end-users and operational procedures on the MVS machines. The support mainly involved debugging CLIST, SAS, JCL, ISPF, applications. The work also included assisting in the periodic installation of new or upgraded software products e.g SAS 5.08, DLF, DCF.During my time with the department I also provided Technical support to the JPCPA task force. My main duty was to provide technical 's assistance in the submission for new equipment. This included designing graphic diagrams of the department's inventory, using AUTOCAD.
