Investigating the genesis and diagenesis of evaporite deposits at Boulby Mine for Summer Vacation Project.Standard PPL and XPL petrography was used as a starting point. Then additional techniques, such as CL and BSEM, were used to see more detail.

Following an interview and thorough medical I secured a 12 week summer placement at Boulby Mine. Here, I gained an appreciation and understanding of the mine, whilst rotating through Rock Engineering, Geology, Survey and Ventilation departments. My main focus was in Rock Engineering (RED), assisting with daily underground roof and sidewall inspections, monitoring ground movement with stress cell and tell tales installation and systematic monitoring, also, daily seismic network monitoring. RED is tasked with control of ground hazards, ground movement, and with ensuring underground safety from a rock mechanics point of view the forefront objective. I spent my time carefully reading the MR14 and HASAWA to understand the work RED is required to undertake in order to maintain compliance with the regulations. I worked alongside the Principal Geotechnical Engineer, Chief Rock Engineer, Ventilation Engineer, Chief Surveyor, Rock Engineering Overseers and Surveyors. I also carried out three weeks with the Geology Department, working alongside the Chief Geologist, Senior Resource Geologist, and Consulting Geologists, becoming competent at logging Evaporite core to required specification including use of QAQC best practices (half core, inserting blanks & duplicates for assay etc).During 60 days on site I spent 31 days underground and also underwent a behavioural safety course.Throughout the placement I gained insight into the mining industry as well as vast amounts of knowledge and information. These aspects were a huge learning curve, and gave me a much clearer understanding of the individual job roles within a fully functioning global company.
