🔶 Pyrotechnic Safety was indelibly etched into the Ethos of my mind on my very first show. In '94, a 13 year old boy came into the firing site, shortly after the show, carrying a 3" "dud" in his outstretched hand. The "dud" had landed, rolled and stopped in front of his parents vehicle, where they were sitting to watch the show, in a parking lot filled with many others. (amazingly, his parents told him to give it back to us, "because it wasn't safe to have it in the parking lot when vehicles were going to be leaving,"..."they might run over it.") Fortunately, after getting the boy to put the dud on the ground and making him leave, it was immersed in water and left to soak for the duration of the strike. ( yes, back then immersion was the thing to do, and it should still be.) 🧨Back when I first started, It should have only taken me 2 years, and 3 letters of recommendation to acquire my Pyrotechnic Public Display License. Yet, I played around with it for 16 years and then got serious about it in 2010. I then found I needed 5 letters of recommendation and a minimum of 8 shows in the next two years. The past 16 years didn't count, and unfortunately most of the Operators never put me on their reports, so there was not much to show for it. Going from one July 4th show every year for 16 years to working 18 shows in 24 months, I became a Licensed Pyrotechnic Operator. 🦺I have taken from all this and the Operators that I did my apprenticeship through, that safety is of the utmost importance and to constantly be vigilant and concerned for the protection of life and property.
