The Transport Systems Catapult (TSC) is part of an elite network of 11 technology and innovation centres backed by the UK Government. Their role is to maximize the benefit to industry from the investment the UK makes in its world class science base. The TSC is focused on the Intelligent Mobility market - the effective and cost efficient movement of goods and people - estimated to be worth £900bn by 2025.Achievements: - built the business from a standing start with no infrastructure to an organisation with over 100 staff working from a world class 37,000 square feet innovation centre;- managed the procurement of the pods for the LUTZ driverless cars programme;led the development of the Technology Strategy for Intelligent Mobility that was successfully launched in April 2016; - established the TSC’s Academic Engagement Programme that now includes 20 leading universities from across the UK;- represented the TSC as an invited speaker at over 40 national and international events; and- created a central bid team that is responsible for all bids across the business.Initially joined the innovation team at Network Rail under Steve Yianni that transitioned to become the founding leadership team of the TSC.

The Advanced Technology Centre is the UK research and technology arm of BAE Systems and is organised into two Themes. The Information and Intelligent Solutions Theme, for which I was accountable from a technology perspective, comprised capabilities in: Autonomous Systems (including the Wildcat driverless car), Human Factors, Systems Engineering, Networks and Communications, Information Processing (including all research into Artificial Intelligence, AI, and the Internet of Things, IoT ) and Computational Engineering (including cloud based GPU processing). Achievements: - delivered a profitable R&D business with a turnover of approximately £15m with ~130 scientists and engineers (joint accountability with Theme Leader); - founder member of BAE Systems’ Investment in Innovation Fund, a novel vehicle for investing in small technology companies;- won and delivered a highly successful technology demonstrator for the Home Office INSTINCT programme focussed on the protection of crowded places; and- secured the businesses’ largest single contract within the emerging security sector.- appointed as a Technology Fellow.

Part of a 13 strong investment team managing 3 venture capital funds totalling over £500m. Specific focus on early stage Internet and new media, software delivered as a service and later stage investments in established companies. Achievements: - part of a small team that led an $8m of $23m investment round, in BridgeCo Inc, a fabless semiconductor company producing chips for streaming audio and video (the technology was later incorporated into the iPhone); - closely involved in a $5m investment in FizzBack, an early stage software company providing customer feedback solutions as a service (Fizzback was later acquired by Nice Systems); and- nominated for the Investor All Stars young personality of the year 2006.

A speech technology company spun out from the Defence Evaluation Research Agency - QinetiQ - to capitalise on 30 years of speech technology research. Employed as a Product Manager but quickly progressed to become General Manager within 3 years.Achievements: - secured new investment from existing shareholders;- took the company from significant loss making to profitability; - re-negotiating license agreements leading to improved subscription revenues;- attracted new customers including BT Payphones Limited, Smiths Aerospace, General Dynamics, and SER Solutions Inc; - developed new business with Intel Corp and RealLegal LLC during a 9-month secondment to the US prior to promotion to General Manager; and - focussed the business on speech data mining for call centre applications.Aurix was later acquired by Avaya due to the focus on telephony data mining though the acquisition occurred after I left Aurix.

Co-founder of PatternComputing PLC, an Artificial Intelligent (AI) company spun out from York University to commercialise a new pattern recognition technology built around a Bayesian approach to probability theory. Application areas included: 3D object acquisition from 2D image sequences; 3D molecule matching; and financial data analysis. Achievements: - co-author of business plan that led to equity placing raising £750,000;- completed agreement to supply 3D molecule matching engine to Oxford Molecular, then the leader in bio-informatics software products;- successfully applied for and managed two DTI funded SMART awards; and- named as inventor on a number of patents.Patterncomputing later became Kickstone Limited and continues to provide AI systems for a range of applications including revenue optimisation for online stores.
