TRL is a centre of excellence for future transport that provides innovative research, technology and software solutions for surface transport modes and related markets of automotive, motorsport, insurance and energy. TRL is independent from government, industry and academia and provides organisations with the evidence-base to enable future innovation in transport. TRL is a is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Transport Research Foundation (TRF), a non-profit distributing company limited by guarantee, and established for the impartial furtherance of transport and related research, consultancy, and expert advice. Accountable for TRL’s strategic ventures including: building a connected and autonomous vehicle (CAV) testing facility in London, the flagship of the UK’s CAV Test Bed; and the creation of a software business from TRL’s disparate software assets including SCOOT, the world’s leading adaptive traffic control software. Achievement include: established a new software products business focused on intelligent signal control, signal and junction design and crash data recording and analysis; developed a new strategy for the software business that included a complete redesign of the operation model and organisational design; implemented an Agile software development methodology; secured £19m from Government and industry to build a CAV testing facility in London (driverless cars), the Smart Mobility Living Lab, in partnership with: TFL, Cisco, Cubic, Loughborough University and the Royal Borough of Greenwich; developed a membership based business model and secured commitment from founding members towards a shared R&D programme. The founding members are: BP, Honda, Aviva and Hastings Direct; and, exceeded all profit and revenue targets.
