Dog Trainer

Current

London, England, United Kingdom

In my current role as a Dog Trainer, I am responsible for undertaking the final stages of the dog's training before they go on to become Assistance Dogs. I train them to do 'taskwork' where they learn to open doors, remove clothing and pick up articles off the floor for their future client with physical disabilities. I am also responsible for ensuring they walk nicely alongside a variety of different walking aids as well as maintaining a loose lead at all times to ensure there isn't any tension in the lead. I take my dogs to a number of different environments to expose them to new environments to ensure they are confident going to a variety of different environments. In my role I have to work with a number of different teams to ensure that everyone has the correct up to date information which shows that I am an effective communicator and a team player.Being able to work as an Assistance Dog Trainer is an extremely rewarding and fulfilling role as I can see the impact a dog can have on someone who has a disability.

Apr 2023 - Present

Block Leader

In my role as a block leader and canine carer, I was responsible for managing the "Booked Dogs" Block in addition to my Canine Carer duties. Following a promotion to Block Leader, I was responsible for managing the "Booked Dogs" block and ensuring that the team was working towards the common goal of the efficient and professional running of the block. This included leading daily stand-ups and communicating with the team to assign tasks and resolve any issues that teammates and volunteers may have throughout the shift. Additionally, I am on-call for any requests (such as dog transfer) as well as problem-solving issues that may hinder the smooth running of the block. This required me to evaluate and decide on the priority of such items on a case-by-case basis and balance them alongside other assigned tasks within the block. As a Canine Carer I was responsible for carrying out daily tasks for the welfare needs of my assigned dogs such as kennel cleaning, feeding (including prescribed medication), walking and training. This included using my training during the lone handling of dogs with a range of serious behavioural issues. Where required, I regularly loaded and transported dogs onto a Dogs Trust vehicle for required treatment (vets, hydrotherapy etc). This required me to manage my time to ensure I can carry these out each shift in an efficient manner whilst managing my other responsibilities (such as those outlined above). Additionally, I ran customer appointments with members of the public interested in adopting a dog. These involved following the process in place at Dogs Trust whilst working in a professional and friendly manner to understand a customer’s needs, ascertain suitability, lead dog meets with customers, organise and complete paperwork with the customer and finally arrange adoption. I found this part of my role to be especially rewarding as it allowed me to build a bond with my customers and see the impact of the work I am doing.

Canine Carer

My role primarily consisted of taking care of the basic welfare needs as well as doing elements of dog training. I am extremely passionate about animal welfare and dog training and am partaking in relevant courses to gain further knowledge in the field of dog training.
