One door closes and another gets open, this new job was a real challenge, the owner told me: we do not have computers, health insurance, the credit line with the bank is not good enough, payables, receivables, and payroll are done by the receptionist, and then he said can you fix all of that? I replied do I have any restrictions? He said no. In less than a year all problems were fixed and I stay with his company until he died 24 years later. The company became the second-largest paper exporter in Florida, the manufacturing facility growth 300% and sales double the manufacturing growth.

Moving on, I found this new job where they were looking to implement this new IBM system where I had experience on, besides, they want me to find new ways to streamline administrative procedures via DOS in what is now known as excel. The chemistry was not that good with the CFO and he decided to let me go, but he asked this last question: how is it possible that the person you replaced was here every day until 7-8 PM and you always leave at 4:30? I replied knowledge and let me show you all the work I already have done in advance, he was very surprised and told me: I did not know how good of an accountant you are, and then he gave me a nice letter of recommendation.

Hired as a credit manager, soon after the president and controller resigned, the treasurer then asked if I could figure out why the financial statements did not match (out of balance), challenge accepted and soon resolved, this gave me a new position at the company. A few months after the owner came from the Philippines I was asked if I could implement a super IBM computer system, of course, I said yes, they sent me to Atlanta to learn about it, after that the implementation was done in 3 months, a lot of hours to get it done, the new president was satisfied with my work but he told me: the day you discover how to do those 60 to 70 hours that you put here week in and week out in half of the time, it will make you a very successful person, this thought in my head gave me a new frontier to reach which I have achieved. This little advice is still opening new doors for me today.

This was my first job in the USA in the accounting field and my boss became my mentor, with the knowledge but not the experience, he gave me his accounting books for me to learn the American system, back then no computers and the adding machines were mechanical, the accountant books were enormous with about 40 columns and many rows to do the entry’s and then manually add them to get the totals at the bottom of each column to balance debits and credits, it was a challenge. The day came when we all knew I had to leave seeking for a better future, we all felt bad and especially my boss by been sick, I offered to the owner to continue coming on weekends to help and he accepted, I did this for the next two years.
