Conducted research on enhancing the prediction of thermomechanical fuel-to-coolant heat transfer under transient conditions for high burnup fuel (HBF) in support of the Advanced Fuels Campaign. Performed coupled safety analyses of Westinghouse-designed pressurized water reactors (PWRs) at steady-state operations and select anticipated operational occurrences (AOOs) and design basis accidents (DBAs).• Designed and validated a RELAP5-3D model of the Oregon State University Transient Reactor Test Loop, simulating PWR reactivity insertion accident (RIA) transients and high pressure steady-state conditions in support of separate effects tests to be conducted.• Developed RELAP5-3D models of a 4-loop PWR to simulate RIAs. Implemented MATLAB scripts to post-process system-scale responses and prepare boundary conditions for subsequent one-way coupled fuel performance analysis using BISON.• Calculated steady-state and transient rod-averaged boundary conditions using PARCS for extended burnup cycle lengths. Analyzed subsequent neutronics and reactor system responses during various control rod ejection and withdrawal transients.• Generated cross-section and isotopic composition data for various Westinghouse 17x17 assembly configurations using the Polaris lattice code, converted subsequent lattice into PARCS-compatible cross-sections using the GenPMAX code module.
Graduate Research Assistant
Conducted research on thermal hydraulic and thermomechanical multiphysics coupling to optimize californium-252 production at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR). Perturbed and examined various assembly thermophysical properties and analyzed their safety implications on the HFIR under time and temperature-variant loads and conditions.• Built finite element models of REDC transcurium production assemblies, coupling fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and structural mechanics. Optimized model, reducing compute times by a factor of 4 while maintaining similar solution fidelity.• Implemented MATLAB scripts coupling COMSOL Multiphysics to an in-house isotope depletion and target composition code (TCOMP), generating time and axial-dependent calculations of assembly heat rates and fission gas production.• Assessed currently implemented transcurium production program safety-basis criteria and assumptions, proposed tighter tolerance parameters and updated safety limits, while documenting and justifying amended boundaries.• Benchmarked GE-12 assemblies using deterministic and stochastic (Monte Carlo) based lattice physics codes, such as Polaris, Serpent, and OpenMC, facilitating the verification and validation of MPACT for boiling water reactor (BWR) applications.
