As a part of the practicum course, Quanina assisted high school students from low income schools as they piloted new biology and chemistry curriculum developed at UCSD. She went above and beyond the assigned tasks however, engaging and exciting the students with whom she worked with her own love of science. She was and is a natural teacher. This quality prompted me to recruit her to work as a mentor at the above-mentioned Science Leadership Institute, a high school summer program incorporating university level ecology and molecular biology courses as well as college preparation for high performing, low income students from underrepresented backgrounds. Quanina immediately took up a leadership role working with our students. She was able to quickly grasp concepts and relate them equally well to students from all different backgrounds and levels of understanding. With her love of science and calm demeanor she would draw out the scientific interests of the shyest of high schoolers. Even after the Institute was over, Quanina maintained contact with her students, and continued to work in the community helping teachers implement the molecular biology-based labs her students learned over the summer. When she began thinking about whether to pursue a career in teaching, there was no question!
