My name is Quaylin Wesley, I am 24 years old and from the Bay Area. I received a Bachelors of Arts in Social Welfare from the University of California, Berkeley. I attended McClymonds High School in West Oakland for four years, and graduated with the class of 2017. At McClymonds, I was a captain of the Men’s Basketball, Football, and Track & Field team. Our sports programs at McClymonds made it a priority to give back to our community, and I believe that this is where I started to become really invested in pouring back into the communities I am a part of in a positive way.Being that I have attended schools in different locations around the Bay Area, it taught me how to adapt to different environments and understand people from all walks of life. These experiences ultimately played a part in helping me realize that all I want to do is provide opportunities and resources to those who need them the most. My passion is to help play a role in bridging the gap that students face, in hopes to level the playing field which will grant them more opportunities that will have long lasting positive effects on their lives. While at UC Berkeley, I was a part of the Black Retention and Recruitment Center (BRRC) and served as one of the organization's interns. My role in BRRC was to assist in recruiting and retaining Black students to pursue a college education through a series of organizing events, advising prospective students, and hosting programs that showcase campus life. We offered tutoring, help on the UC College admissions process and essay questions, and even hosted a Bay Area college tour for high school students from the Bay Area and Southern California. In June of 2019, I was given the opportunity to work with Faith Network of the East Bay, now better known as Children Rising, an organization committed to helping students reach their full potential through different programs that encourage academic and life skill development. During my time there, I acted as a Program Assistant Manager, in which one of my primary roles was to host a series of professional development workshops for the high school students in the program. We envision a world where every child has equal access to what they need to be successful.I am a strong believer in exposure leads to expansion, meaning in order for one to be successful, they must be exposed to different environments and opportunities.
