Product Unit Manager - Winfs
Was initially Program Management leader, then GM for WinFS project 2003 to its termination in 2006. Was internal and external face for project, defined core product, worked cross-company dependencies and challenges, was key leader in the team. Complexity all around very high - technical, vision, cross-team, user and developer paradigms, etc. A lot of exec-level (BillG, systems EVP and CTO) weekly engagement, dependencies across the company and changing requirements. WinFS was two terribly challenging things: 1. solve an age-old technical challenge of integrating relational and file storage and management and 2. build a new paradigm for end-users for how information is presented and relates across files and other end-user items (like contacts or emails). This all happening in impossibly complex “Longhorn” Windows project. While the end-user experiences didn't not make it to Windows, the full integrated storage work ultimately shipped as part of SQL Server 2012.
