About Quentin Hanich

Professor Quentin Hanich leads the Fisheries Governance Research Program and is a Nippon Foundation Ocean Nexus Research Chair. He works throughout the Indo-Pacific region in various international research partnerships focusing on ocean governance and equity, marine conservation, and the sustainable and equitable management of transboundary fisheries. He is particularly interested in strategic research and capacity building projects that support equitable ocean outcomes for coastal developing States. With this goal in mind, he engages closely with governments, stakeholders and international fora, and develops collaborative studies and courses that address current and future ocean governance and policy challenges. Quentin is also a member of the UN Experts Panel for the World Ocean Assessment, and the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas. Quentin lives by the sea and loves the ocean, its nature and its people.

    Dr Hanich has an extensive research and consulting track record in fisheries governance and development. Much of this work was funded by commercial research and policy contracts and research grants. He has written over 80 peer reviewed papers, book chapters and research reports and is regularly interviewed in Australian and international media as a regional expert on fisheries and marine conservation matters. His publications have been cited widely in regional development and governance literature, and increasingly in research literature. For example Closing the Gaps, was cited by the Australian Government Senate Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade References Committee in 2009, Managing Fisheries and Corruption was cited by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in 2011, and Mapping the Distribution of the Conservation Burden was cited by the 2012 Scientific Committee to the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) with a recommendation that the WCPFC address the issues raised in the paper. In 2013, the WCPFC subsequently adopted two conservation measures tabled by the Pacific island States that explicitly addressed these issues.Dr Hanich has developed and taught professional short courses on international natural resource negotiations, and legal frameworks for fisheries management. In addition, he regularly lectures to professional and post-graduate audiences on oceans governance, marine conservation, and fisheries governance and development.
