About Matt Hill

I am a freelance artist and creative practitioner using songwriting as a way to connect with and empower people. I work with people on the margins of society, whose voices are often ignored. I want my work to amplify working class voices. I especially love to work with those who have never written a song before. Songs are great vehicles for exploring topics like history, place and identity. I approach sessions with a sense of joy, adventure and playfulness. The songs we write are often performed, sometimes recorded or played in galleries and museums. My work has been commissioned by prominent arts organisations, national museums and charities. I've been resident songwriter in a museum and have run songwriting sessions in schools, care homes, prisons and homeless day centres. I have worked on all kinds of projects. You can hear some of my work at https://matthillsongwriter.com/project-workHere's 7 of my favourites1) Writing medieval chants and hymns with people who've experienced homelessness2) Taking museum objects into prison and then writing songs about them3) Writing songs with school children inspired by artwork in a gallery4) Writing lullabies over the phone with isolated older adults during lockdown5) Singing Protest Songs with babies and toddlers6) Creatively exploring the memories of people with dementia using music and songs7) Songwriter residency in a museum - giving new life to the collection through songsI have a person-centred approach that is rooted in my background as a charity professional with over 20 years’ experience in the disability sector, where I specialised in communications, campaigns and engagement with service users/beneficiaries. My own work as a singer-songwriter has seen me release several albums and tour across the UK and Europe. My career highs include an appearance with Billy Bragg at Glastonbury Festival, national radio play on BBC6 music and I’ve even sung one of my songs on BBC TV’s ‘Flog it’!

Working with people who have experienced homelessness to re-write Wordsworth's poems as songs. Refuge from the Ravens was a multi-disciplinary arts project from Zweilbelfish CIC working with The Wordsworth, Grasmere ; Back on Track and Invisible Cities, (Homeless support charities in Manchester) and Bury Art Museum. I provided songwriting workshops and recordings of performances from the participants. We used Wordsworth work as inspiration exploring themes within it. For example we looked at his poem 'Goody Blake' which describes the effects of winter cold and created work based on people's own experiences of feeling cold. The songs sit alongside poems and soundscapes as part of a 21st century rewrite of Lyrical Ballads (1798) by William Wordsworth. Over 100 people affected by homelessness were involved in creating the work and you can hear their voices within the recordings.

Finally I developed and performed a 'work in progress' show under the direction of theatre producer Jonathan McGrath.
  • Arts Derbyshire
Artist : A Necklace Of Stars
    Arts Derbyshire Apr 2021 - May 2022
    Derbyshire, England, United Kingdom
Writing lullabies with isolated older adults over the phone during lockdown.A Necklace of Stars celebrates childhood and the night sky in words, song and stitches. The project is a testimony to the power of human connection and creativity in the face of lockdowns and isolation. A Necklace of Stars was set up pre-Covid-19 to tackle isolation and loneliness in housebound older adults in Derbyshire. The original plan had been for individuals to receive one-to-one sessions in their own home but Covid-19 happened and the approach had to change. Participants received weekly one to one phone calls from the artists. I worked alongside textile artist Lois Blackburn and poet Philip Davenport with nearly 100 participants, talking for months over the phone. Together we sang and wrote lullabies, recording voices down a phoneline and stitching sounds together. The final recordings are of voices coming from a place of isolation. These phone calls, these songs formed a point of connection. The quilt of embroidered stars was exhibited around Derbyshire’s cultural venues, alongside a catalogue of poems and our lullaby soundtrack.
