Duurzame ontwikkeling is in Nederland een trend die door vele initiatieven wordt gestimuleerd. Eén van die initiatieven komt vanuit de organisatie Closing the Loop. Deze organisatie wil in het kader van her –en duurzaam gebruik van metalen en plastics een circulaire afvalstroom voor kapotte mobiele telefoons ontwikkelen in Ghana. Er worden er moeilijkheden ondervonden bij het inzamelen van de mobiele telefoons. Mijn masteronderzoek geeft antwoord op de vraag vanuit Closing the Loop wat ‘de Ghanezen’ met kapotte telefoons doen. Om te kunnen achterhalen waarom het inzamelen van mobiele telefoons in Ghana zo moeilijk verloopt, heb ik tijdens mijn etnografische onderzoek bekeken op welke manier Ghanese vrouwen omgaan met (afval)materiaal. Kort samengevat is er gebleken dat er ten eerste weinig huishoudelijk afval wordt geproduceerd in Noord-Ghana, waardoor er geen 'afvalstromen' te herkennen zijn. Ten tweede heeft het concept recycling in Noord-Ghana een andere betekenis dan in Nederland. Hier smelt men materialen om tot nieuwe voorwerpen, terwijl men in Ghana materiaal in zijn geheel hergebruikt voor een nieuw doeleinde. Ten derde is milieuduurzaamheid een onbekend begrip in Ghana en zijn mensen zich niet bewust van de milieuvervuiling die wordt aangericht. Een project dat zich focust op het behoud van natuurlijke hulpbronnen zal daardoor niet snel worden begrepen of participerende burgers aantrekken. Ten vierde speelt sociale duurzaamheid een grote rol bij het bewaren en weggegeven van materiaal. Doordat er veel armoede is in Noord-Ghana houdt men vast aan materiaal wat bijvoorbeeld nog kan dienen als cadeau. Een kapotte telefoon kan als speelgoed dienen voor het kind van een familielid bijvoorbeeld. Hierdoor is er dus wel een circulaire (afval)stroom, maar deze is niet gebaseerd op het recycleprincipe dat in Nederland wordt gehanteerd.
