At the age of 20, soon realising that the university lecture room was no longer the place for me, I made the decision to follow my love of film into the world of Cinema. I learnt every aspect of the industry; from Marketing to HR, Retail and H&S. I trained prospective new managers and visited cinemas across the UK to help ‘clean up’ poor performing sites with meticulous management and providing inspiration to the staff who just needed a helpful hand. The icing on the cake was meeting Will Smith at the premier of Hitch! However, after reaching the heights of Deputy General Manager, I felt it was time for a new challenge.My new challenge was working within the Public Sector for West Midlands Police Sports & Conferencing Centre, the second largest of its kind in the UK. It was a stark change to the world of cinema but gave me a chance to make some major impact from the top down. After restructuring the business and steering it away from potential doom, it soon became a very successful none profit organisation. With changes to my life, it was once again time for a new challenge and after 9 years I handed over the reins. Whilst in Costa Rica, I was approached by a friend who was looking for someone to come in to their ever-expanding cleaning and facilities management business that had moved up in to the realm of an SME. It was already successful but with expansion there were new demands and processes were required. I can honestly say this was certainly a challenge, one which at times almost broke me but at other times made me into the person I am today. It was a steep learning curve, dealing with things that I had never had to deal with before but I am glad that I took the challenge on and came out of the otherside a more resilient manager and person. However, after 18 months I realised that I was still missing something, the self worth just wasn't there and although it was hard to walk away from a phenomenal business, I felt I needed a new role. The thought of school business management had always appealed to me, I could utilse the skills and knowledge that I had built up over the years, but also have that wonderful feeling on giving something back. Working to provide a safe and healthy environment for pupils and staff, schools could give me the positive feeling that I was looking for. Notoriously hard to get into, I was fortunate to be given the opportunity at an outstanding Independent school. Once again the challenges were huge...Covid-19 reared its head just two months in but I know this was finally the place for me!
