Mr. Dawes had a distinguished career in Law Enforcement, having worked for the Orange County, Florida Sheriff's Office as an aide to Sheriff Melvin G. Colman, a Patrol Officer and Sergeant for the Winter Garden Police Department, where he was a Hostage Negotiator, Jakata Instructor, and Help Stop Crime Officer. From 1978 to 1992 he was employed by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office in Tampa, Florida and retired as an Economic Crimes Detective. He worked undercover at the Major Violators Unit and for the Joint F.B.I. Bank Fraud Task Force. He had a 95% conviction rate and the highest clearance rate for any Detective in the District. He received numerous awards for heroic actions and had the highest arrest rate for Armed Robberies after the fact while in the Patrol Division. After retirement, he was the Chief Investigator and part owner of the Florida Vehicle Recovery Bureau.
