Large Stationary Target is one of the last untold tales of World War II, a naval history of men aboard seven sister ships who fought together in the Mediterranean, and again in Normandy on D-Day. The men were a classic cross-section of World War II America, volunteers and draftees from every corner of the land: farm hands, factory workers, pharmacists, and kids right out of high school. Their officers were reservists mostly, some fresh from college ROTC programs. The ships were a brand-new type invented during the war called the Tank Landing Ship, or LST for “Landing Ship, Tank” in the Navy’s nomenclature. They were big, about as long as a football field; ocean-going vessels but only just barely so. They had a flat bottom, so in heavy seas an LST would pitch and roll violently. But inside that flat-bottom an LST could carry twenty Sherman tanks for the army, or an equal weight in trucks and jeeps, plus hundreds of soldiers to man them. And with that flat bottom an LST could nose up onto a beach, open the bow doors, and out would roll those tanks, and trucks and jeeps and troops, ready for battle.Check for progress updates on my public Facebook page: USS LST 307.
