With over 500 physician members, NHCQF’s Mission was “To advance excellent and efficient health care.” NHCQF served as the federally-contracted Medicare Quality Improvement Organization (QIO) for the states of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. QIOs were responsible for measuring and improving the quality of care provided in the state. NHCQF was awarded initial and subsequent renewal contracts in competitive bidding processes to serve as the QIO for New Hampshire and Vermont from 1984 through 2014 and for Maine from 1996 through 2014.Under the Affordable Care Act, Medicare programs, administered by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) were consolidated and NHCQF lost its QIO contracts and ceased operations at the end of 2014.In 2009, NHCQF received CMS’s inaugural “Quality Champion Award” for overall greatest improvements in the nation in care provided in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. Awarded a written Commendation from the NHCQF Board after accepting this Award at a national CMS Conference In Baltimore, which stated that the Board viewed the Award “as a clear statement by the industry about your ability to provide a culture of excellence within our organization, to foster and effectively use relationships within the provider communities and to focus on the specifics and intent of the CMS program. We are glad that CMS is formally recognizing the quality of work that you have shown for many years.”
