About Rabbi Jacob Herber

As the Senior Rabbi of Herzl-Ner Tamid, a vibrant and diverse Conservative congregation on Mercer Island, WA, I have been serving the spiritual, educational, and pastoral needs of my community for over four years. With a background in Jewish philosophy and theology, I strive to inspire and challenge my congregants to explore the richness and relevance of Judaism in their lives. I am a strategic and visionary thinker with extensive experience leading institutions and synagogues through organizational change.I am also a Senior Rabbinic Fellow of the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem, where I previously worked on the national staff of Shalom Hartman North America. I have extensive leadership experience in the Jewish world, having served on various boards and committees of national and international organizations. I have traveled to several countries to promote interfaith dialogue, support the State of Israel, and welcome new members to the Jewish people. I am passionate about writing, teaching, and learning, and I enjoy sharing my insights and perspectives with diverse audiences. In addition to my congregational work I proudly serve my country as a member of The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and as a USCG Auxiliary chaplain, providing pastoral support to both active and reserve US Coast Guard personnel.

As CBINT's spiritual leader I oversee the congregations' religious, lifecycle, and educational programs. During my tenure I have led the effort to change our membership model from a traditional dues paying structure to a tzedakah framework, and I secured the lead gift of a multi-million dollar capital campaign that enabled our congregation to undertake a major, successful renovation of our synagogue campus. I am passionate about teaching Torah to Jews of all ages, and I take great pride in being an articulate and compelling public speaker - both on and off the bimah. Not satisfied with waiting for people to walk through the synagogue door, I have developed creative outreach approaches to meet both members and potential members where they are.Serving the greater Jewish community is very important to me and my Rabbinate. I have and do serve as a leader in the local and national Jewish communities. I have served on the board of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation and two terms as President of the Wisconsin Council of Rabbis. Four the last three years I have served as Chair the Rabbinical Assembly's Commission for Vital and Connected Rabbinate, overseeing the work of 11 committees. I serve as a member of the Leadership Team of the RA's Strategic Vision Team, and as a member of the RA's Executive Council. I also serve on the Shalom Hartman Institute's Rabbinic Advisory Board.
