I am excited to be joining the team at Novagrow in the role of Research and Development Manager! I will be taking on a variety of projects aimed at further increasing the ease of growing sprouts and microgreens at home with Novagrow, optimizing the system and ensuring clients have tools to produce high quality and nutritious greens.

My Masters' thesis research focuses primarily on improving small scale hydroponic food production. Work is being carried out in collaboration with Gardyn Inc, as working to optimize Gardyn Home grow system is a part of my focus. My work includes writing reviews, designing and running experiments and publishing results. Experiments are carried out in growth chambers, greenhouses and ambient environments. All focus around hydroponic food production.A small team wrote a Mitacs grant, which was awarded to the value of $280,000 over five years.

Worked on a team to develop the ACE GC for the Community Engagement Centre at McGill's Macdonald Campus Farm. The ACE GC is akin to a 'Plant Vending Machin;' a controlled environment with vertical food production hydroponic system display employing the use of a robotic arm to move crops between grow locals. My key role in the project was developing to secure funding and design and build the hydroponic and system monitor and control system, but as a core team of two people, we both worked closely with all aspects of the project. From retrofitting a fridge into the growth environment, installing ventilation, linear motion system, hydroponic system, and the robotic arm. McGill's Sustainable Projects Fund provided a grant of $33,000 for the project.

Beaverlodge Research Farm, Peace Region, Ab

Seeded, produced and harvested varying forage crop growth field experiments. Collected, processed and tested soil and crop samples throughout the experiments. Operated various farm equipment, including tractors, seed drills, forage harvesters and lawnmowers. Collected and organized data from field experiments.

Responsibilities included managing the stores when managers were not present, serving clients, preparing paint products and managing inventory.

Barbados

Worked with a team completing the construction of the NVAC Greenhouse at McGill's Bellairs Campus in Barbados, as a part of PhD research. After completing construction the hydroponic drip irrigation and evaporative cooling systems built and installed. Finally, crops were cultivated and data were collected to measure the impact of the evaporative cooling and novel roof design on the environment. As the only undergraduate student collaborator from an engineering program, I took a lead role among the students in building both the greenhouse and establishing the systems within it. This experience gave the team hands on experience working with restriction in material availability, requiring us to employ resourcefulness.

Okanagan Valley, British Columbia

Worked on an international team of cherry pickers during the 2014 harvest. Work included self-motivated physical labour and long hours working outdoors.
