I work as part of ZSL's Conservation Technology Unit developing and re-purposing emerging technologies to help solve conservation problems and make tech within reach of charities with limited resources, within a range of diverse projects.I organise Hackathons, bringing together disparate disciplines to work on solutions for pressing conservation challenges. I also work to develop solutions into viable products. This included a community reporting mobile application that facilitates anonymous reporting of incidences of wildlife crime, and image recognition solutions to triage incoming camera trap images to identify potential poaching threats.Together with ZSL and the Arribada Initiative, I am working on an architecture update and component revision to the popular open source GPS Mataki tag (http://mataki.org/), including bespoke enclosures for species living in a variety of environments. This includes projects on green sea turtles on the island of Principe in the Gulf of Guinea and rare waterbirds such as the Hooded Grebe in Patagonia. The aim is to make technologies open source and available so that vital information on ecology and behaviour can be unlocked that will enable better protection of these species under threat.I am also involved in the Arribada Initiative to provide an online service to better enable conservationists to find, procure, maintain and develop emerging technologies to meet their needs. We have been working with technologies such as the open acoustic device, Audiomoth, and others, in order to develop this initiative.
