It was a tough, gruelling and exhausting year, but ultimately extremely rewarding. The intensity of this leadership role, where the leader is on-duty all day, every day, for 12 months with no respite, gave me the opportunity to road test my leadership ideas the hard way. It was a "leadership laboratory" in the most extreme, hostile workplace on Earth. Since returning from Antarctica, I have presented at over 1500 conferences on the topics of leadership, teamwork, collaboration and safety. My key message is that "respect trumps harmony". To build this culture of respect the first rule is: No Triangles, the importance of direct conversations.In late 2019 my team and I surveyed 200 teams that have implemented the practice of No Triangles (across large corporations and Fortune 500 companies, public sector departments and agencies, schools, hospital and volunteer groups) to quantify the impact. The results were astonishing. 100% of these 200 teams said it improved morale. A further 89% said it freed up time and energy; in 30% of cases up to 1 hour a day. This data, combined with real life case studies, became the basis of my new book "Respect trumps Harmony".
