I have always known I wanted to be a teacher since I was little, but I did not realize that my passion was special education until my sister was born with Down Syndrome in 2006. She changed my life and my family in many ways, she added challenges, but also added laughter, joy, and a unique light that I am convinced only special needs individuals possess. My dream job is to work with students with cognitive impairments at the secondary age level. I enjoy working with students with special needs because I love to watch them learn new things. Children with special needs learn differently, but they do in fact learn. As a teacher, I would like to come up with new ways to help my future students learn to the best of their ability and gain independence. I would also like to return to school in the future, to get my Masters in Autism Spectrum Disorders, in order to expand the types of students I can work with. I hope that throughout my career I get the opportunity to work with all different kinds of students, that I get to enjoy seeing them reach their potential, and that I get to see them let their light shine.

Summer CaregiverThe Arc Jun 2013 - PresentI started caring for a young adult with autism the summer of 2013, and I will be doing this again in the summer of 2014. I work with him 35 hours a week, from when school gets out in June till the end of August. Also, I am employed through The Arc (The Association for Retarded Children). During the summer, we go bowling, to the park, the library, and other assorted places within the community. We also spend time together at his house doing activities he enjoys.

Summer Sunday School TeacherRosedale Gardens Presbyterian Church Jun 2013 - PresentLivonia, MichiganDuring the summer of 2013, I worked as a Sunday school teacher at Rosedale Gardens Presbyterian Church with kids between the ages of 4-12. Every week I followed a basic curriculum program, and came up with activities and made art projects for the kids to do that went along with what we were learning that week. I plan on doing this again this summer, the summer of 2014.

Paraprofessional For Summer School ProgramBurger Autism Center Jul 2014 - Aug 2016I will be working as a One-on-one (1:1) paraprofessional for Burger Autism Center's summer school program. It is a 5 week session that has half days, 3 days a week. I am very excited for this opportunity and can not wait to get started! The program begins in July, I have also been able to sub as a paraprofessional a few days this month before school got out, and I hope to be doing more subbing in the future.

I also play and interact with the students, in the room I work in all the students are 4 to 5 years old.
