I am Professor of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology and co-direct the Department of Respiratory Medicine (UCL Respiratory) which comprises around 85 academic staff, including eleven principal investigators, working at the forefront of respiratory research and medicine. I have published over 200 articles (https://profiles.ucl.ac.uk/447-rachel-chambers/publications) and have have led major successful funding awards, including multi-institutional bids throughout my career. I continue to hold senior academic leadership positions at UCL and regularly serve on major national and international panels, committees and advisory boards.My research area is focussed on the identification of the key signalling pathways and transcriptional networks underlying the abnormal tissue injury response to acute and chronic lung injury. This research programme is based within the clinical settings of pulmonary fibrosis, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and more recently in the setting of post-COVID residual lung abnormalities. Our research approach integrates fundamental studies using patient derived cells, lung tissue and complex disease model systems, including lung organoids and precision-cut lung slices (PCLS) through to early translational studies in humans. My research group encompasses a dynamic mix of scientists, clinician scientists and PhD students and our research is funded by grants obtained from major funding agencies (including UKRI/Medical Research Council, The Wellcome Trust, Asthma and Lung UK and The Rosetrees Trust) and via collaborative research agreements with industry. I have a keen interest in Enterprise and Innovation and am Academic Lead of the MRC and GSK co-funded multi-institutional EMINENT (Experimental Medicine Initiative to Explore New Therapies) network.
