The information I provide ranges from background knowledge of the exhibitions, to the whereabouts of the cafe, cloakroom and restrooms. The volunteers are there to provide a friendly and approachable face for visitors to the gallery. As an organisation with such a rich archive I am interested in the innovative and creative ways in which Tate uses it and shares content with the public. Whether this be through large exhibitions with curators from Tate, or working with partners and artists to explore new ideas for digital projects and displays. Learning with art is a primary concern for Tate and I have gained insight in to various projects with this goal. Tate is also dedicated to championing diversity and I have seen this demonstrated throughout the organisation from staffing to specific events and general access provision in the galleries.I have a strong interest in art and art history, but also the way in which institutions engage with the public. I enjoy being part of the Tate and gaining an insight in to the organisation, as well as having access to detailed information about Tate's learning and diversity programmes. Ultimately the role keeps me abreast of developments in the art world, and I also take pleasure in sharing my passion for British art and heritage with others. Show less -

The yurt acts as green room for the festival and I was keen to return to such an insightful and stimulating position. I was part of a small team providing hospitality to visiting authors, publishers and their guests. I was recruited as a result of my extensive knowledge and enthusiasm for literature as well as my strong interpersonal skills. As many of the guests are international it is incredible to find language barriers overcome by a shared passion for literature and events. It was a deeply informative environment where I learnt a lot through discussion. At the hub of the festival, the yurt team was in contact with colleagues across the site. Due to the tight turnaround time for events it was crucial to be adaptable and efficient. Whether a colleague, a visitor or a Nobel prize-winning author, my personal skills ensure that whilst an event runs strictly to schedule, I maintain an affable and welcoming manner. I thrived as part of a small team with a high level of responsibility. The role required the ability to work collaboratively and independently to provide the best experience possible for guests. I am passionate about the positive gain for international relations through the arts, and Edinburgh International Book Festival is exemplary of how productive it can be. Diversity of age, sex, race and nationality, to name a few, conduced a stimulating, inspiring atmosphere inside the yurt and throughout the festival.A list of key duties:- Providing administration and hospitality services for authors and their guests. - Work closely with a small team to ensure that every eventuality is handled smoothly and efficiently. - Visitor services, whereby we are representing the organisation to publishers, agents, authors and the general public. Our task was to write a script, based on workshops in which we explored experiences of living in Sheffield. The extended project was to evolve a further performance based on the first, incorporating oral histories from Sheffield. Our short play was performed on the Crucible Theatre stage as part of the re-opening ceremonies. This was an exciting event to attend and be part of. The Crucible is a leading theatre and brings many fantastic opportunities to the community. I enjoyed working with the Education Officers and learning about the various programmes and projects. The placement developed my skills in teamwork, taking initiative and working creatively unsupervised. A strong link with the community was imperative, and the success rested in our ability to achieve this as a hard working and fun team. We had to communicate with various professionals to achieve our project and received excellent feedback at the results. The placement demonstrated my ability to work as a group within a specific field of knowledge, towards something with and for the public. I found the direct relation with visitors and their positive responses made the placement a rewarding one. It helped me understand different aspects of theatre – from the performance to the team of people involved in running the venue. Maintaining the position alongside my degree demonstrated my ability to time-manage effectively. I enjoy working with diverse groups of people, and I was proud to be part of a team that worked hard to accommodate all facets of the community. Show less
