About Rachel Harding

Marine geoscientist, with 15 years seismic reflection interpretation experience, specialising in Quaternary near surface high-resolution seismic in the North Sea. Experience in the Energy Sector and Geoarchaeology. Currently working with heritage organisations and industrial partners to improve legislation and archaeological mitigation processes for seabed development.Currently working in geoarchaeology, mapping the submerged landscapes of the Late Quaternary and Holocene in the southern North Sea with the Submerged Landscapes Team at the University of Bradford. Acquiring and interpreting seismic and core data, integrated with windfarm data to produce detailed geological maps of the late Pleistocene to early Holocene for archaeological prospection and landscape modelling. Current projects include AHRC-funded projects Unpath'd Waters, part of the Towards a National Collection project, which involves a simulation of Doggerland for research and outreach purposes and a GIS data package collating geological, geomorphological and archaeological data from the southern North Sea. Also working on the Taken at the Flood project, which is using new methods to investigate the submerged landscape of the southern North Sea, prospecting for archaeological material and working with heritage organisations and industrial partners to improve legislation and mitigation processes for seabed development.PhD in Early Quaternary sea level change and palaeoenvironmental reconstruction using seismic reflection and borehole data.Palaeoenvironmental reconstructionSubmerged LandscapesPalaeolandscapesDoggerlandMesolithic archaeologySalt tectonicsSea level changeSequence stratigraphySouthern North Sea

Thesis Title: Evolution of the Late Cenozoic Giant Southern North Sea Delta, Testing Sequence Stratigraphic Concepts and the Global Sea Level Curve with Full Three Dimensional Control.Supervisors: Dr Mads Huuse, Professor Rob Gawthorpe, Dr Johan ten Veen.Funded by NERC (National Environmental Research Council) & CASE funded by TNO (Netherlands Geological Survey); Data providers: PGS. Principle aim is to use continuous 3D seismic PGS MegaSurvey and borehole data to study adelta/shelf system on a regional scale. This case study will be used to test sequence stratigraphic concepts, to study the main controls on clinoform geometry, changes in paleo-geomorphology during rapid climate deterioration and early stage salt tectonics. Combination of techniques and software used; Schlumberger Petrel for main seismic and well log interpretation; and attribute analysis of stratigraphic features; FFA Geoteric for spectral decomposition and seismic smoothing, Ellis Paleoscan for auto horizon interpretation of areas of interest.
