The best thing about working with pre-med students is this: there is no one BEST way to be a pre-med student. One of the most exciting things about this career has been learning that admission to medical school--and success as a burgeoning health care provider--is not based on an algorithm. Every week, every semester, every year, I watch students redefine--each in their own peculiar way--determination, resilience, success. One is brilliantly in tune with the needs of her community, another is relentlessly curious about new ways to solve research questions and investigate emerging diseases, while another is unfailingly measured, calming, and benevolent in his approach to solving problems. It is a privilege to help guide new classes of students through seminars, workshops, and one-on-one coaching as they become the authors of their careers.

I provided ongoing academic advisement, counseling, and referrals to students in the Engineering Technology and Surveying programs. I also represented the department at recruitment and public relations events and developed print and online marketing materials for these events. I led departmental orientation sessions for incoming majors and taught a freshman seminar course for new students.

I developed and implemented a comprehensive marketing and enrollment management plan to bring a federal grant proposal off the page and into the School of Nursing at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Working registered nurses furthered their educations and improved patient outcomes without having to leave their posts to return to school. I provided pre-enrollment counseling, academic advisement, advocacy, campus referrals, and other student support services.

I taught freshman courses in rhetorical analysis and composition, emphasizing visual and verbal communication cues.
