About Rachel Shepherd

About me:I currently work for Parexel as a Principal Scientist focusing on ICP-MS. I defended my PhD in Chemistry in December of 2022, with a focus in biochemistry. I am additionally a 2017 graduate of Trinity University with a B.S. in Biochemistry. I held the position of Vice President of on-campus events for the ACS Chemistry Club on campus in addition to holding executive positions in other clubs on campus. Scientific Skillset:At SystImmune I worked in Process Development. I have grown CHO cells and participated in experiments to optimize the growth conditions for protein expression and other parameters. I also ran Pro A purification via AKTA FPLC as needed of these samples. I additionally quantified proteins using BLI (Octet96), and characterized them with SEC, CIEF, and CE-SDS.From 2017-2023 I was a member of the Lindahl lab focusing on metal ion detection in organelles from S. cerevisiae. I was also the Lindahl lab safety liaison, in charge of making sure the lab is prepared for inspection and that chemicals and biohazards are disposed of properly beginning in 2020. From this position I have experience with aseptic technique, agilent ICP-MS, agilent HPLC, mBraun Anaerobic gloveboxes. My research project has utilized S. cerevisiae for organelle isolation, and I have utilized gel electrophoresis/western blots, respirometry, and confocal microscopy to characterize my organelles. My undergraduate research focused on protein characterization. I utilized ATKA FPLCs, isolated metalloproteins, determined their PkA’s, and observed chemical modification using both UV-Vis spectroscopy and CD Spectroscopy. This research utilized proteins from plasmids incorporated into E. coli, so I have experience with transforming E. coli, protein overexpression, and plasmid creation.

Listed skills include Research, Microsoft Excel, Protein Characterization, Protein Purification, and 9 others.
