The visitor services assistant (VSA) position at Minnetrista is comprised of two roles, interpreter for the museum and grounds as well as front desk staff. As a VSA we would have multiple shifts in each role every week. The interpreter side of my job varied based on the season. In the warm seasons we would walk the 40 acre campus assisting visitors with whatever they may need. As a VSA I was on the front lines of Visitor Service, my purpose was to be there to answer any questions and meet visitor demands. Responsibilities included: locking gates at night, finding lost children, directing people to public restrooms, giving tours to guests, setting up events, counting visitor numbers and keeping a log of visitor activities. In the winter time the Interpreter is responsible for exhibit up keep and interaction. I helped guests connect with the exhibit and get the most out of their visit. The interpreter is also responsible for helping with event preparation and activities. My other role as a VSA was running front desk operations. This job consisted of directing visitors and internal communication. Additionally, the desk assistant collected admissions while maintaining a $300 drawer. Other desk responsibilities included monitoring the loading dock, using a database for referencing events and customer information, and securing the building at night.

I was responsible for the excess inventory in the storeroom, entering excess product into the system and removing items when space on the sales floor became available. I also ensured the storeroom was tidy and organized.

I assisted Gyneth Augsburger, the director of Jay County Visitor's Bureau, with day to day activities as she worked with local businesses to improve and promote the community. The capstone project of my time there was designing a PowerPoint presentation that Gyneth could use to attract potential visitors. This project required me to get to know the community intimately in order to best understand how to promote it. In addition I was fortunate enough attended several meetings with Gyneth who is part of the Indiana East Region Tourism Co-op as well as the Association of Indiana Convention and Visitors Bureaus.
