About Rachel Doughty
I have taught in Poway Unified School District for the last five years. During that time, I have taught students in TK, kindergarten, first, second, and third grade. In May of 2024, I earned my M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction from California State University San Marcos. As part of my thesis research, I sought to understand the factors that shape peer engagement in my classroom. Through student surveys, interviews, and a focus group I found that my students willingness to work with different peers changed based on subject matter and teaching modality. Ultimately, I focused on using my research to understand how to increase student engagement in my classroom. This led me to provide my students with appropriate voice and choice about who they worked with during collaborative peer conversations. To support student success, I facilitated student participation in frequent self-assessment activities related to partner selection.

Teacher Candidate | Design 39 Campus
During my second Clinical Practice assignment, I taught Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten students in face-to-face and virtual environments at Design 39 Campus. As a learner-centered lab school, Design 39 Campus is a highly innovative environment where design thinking, collaboration, and creativity are at the forefront. I had the opportunity to collaborate with the TK/K team daily, as we worked together to create engaging and meaningful curriculum for students during in-person and distance learning. During distance learning, I became focused on providing equitable instruction that supported the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) needs of my young learners. In response to these concerns, I created two original units of instruction that were made available to all TK and Kindergarten students at Design 39 Campus through live Zoom meetings. One unit I created focused on the the needs of wild animals. Students were invited to bring their favorite stuffed animal to class each day, to provide emotional comfort during such unusual times. As we explored resources from San Diego Zoo Kids and Pebble Go, students were invited to choose any animal of interest to research during the week. Using materials found in their homes, students created signs to share three facts they discovered during independent research. At the end of the week, student shared their signs with peers during an exhibition before posting them around their neighborhood communities to share with others. In addition to live instruction through Zoom, I utilized Seesaw, Padlet, and Loom to communicate with students and families regularly.
Teacher Candidate | Stone Ranch Elementary School
During my first Clinical Practice assignment, I worked as a Teacher Candidate in a third grade classroom at Stone Ranch Elementary School. At Stone Ranch, I taught lesson plans in all subject areas. Throughout the fall semester, whether teaching art or mathematics, I focused on increasing the integration of hands-on activities and technology into my lessons. Asking students to collaborate in small groups, bringing real-world applications to mathematics, and utilizing Kahoot to make review days more fun, I sought to foster student engagement and deepen learning throughout my time at Stone Ranch. During this time, I also had the opportunity to work with a variety of team members and participate in IEP, 504, and initial IAT meetings.
Kindergarten Tutor | La Mirada Academy (Title 1)

I worked with students in one-on-one and group settings, while providing intervention support in both reading and mathematics.
