Rachel Gutter was Senior Vice President of Knowledge at the U.S. Green Building Council and Director of the Center for Green Schools. Rachel’s dynamic leadership provided a subtle and powerful voice, convening international corporations, globally recognized institutions, and government entities around a singular purpose: to put every student in a green school within this generation. At the USGBC, she was recognized as a transformative force, bringing a burst of creativity and strategic thinking to each team she works with, uplifting and energizing teams to reach their most daring achievements. Under her direction, the Center for Green schools published over 1,000 pages of technical guides and original research and deployed more than half a million volunteers who have contributed $46 million in donated time to transform schools across the world. She led the Education @USGBC team to develop a groundbreaking education platform and curate thousands of hours of premier sustainability related content.Rachel is one of the foremost experts on healthy, safe, and resource efficient schools. In 2007, she launched LEED for Schools, a version of the U.S. Green Building Council’s popular green building certification program that facilitates the design, construction, and operations of high-performance green schools. Later that year, she spearheaded the National Green Schools Campaign to engage students and teachers, parents and school superintendents, elected officials and college presidents in a national conversation about the relationship between high-performance educational facilities and high-performing students. Capturing that energy, Rachel founded the Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council in 2010.Her six years of teaching experience fuel her commitment to educate a generation of sustainability natives, individuals proudly capable and equipped to take on 21st century challenges, who intuitively know the language of green.
