"Xinachtli (Sheen-ach-tlee) is a Nahuatl word of MesoAmerica. Indigenous languages carry the breadth and knowledge to articulate the liminal and in this case capture the essence of our work and program in a single word. Xinachtli articulates the bursting that occurs when a seed germinates and enters the 'in-between' where it is no longer a seed and not yet the plant it will become." Xinachtli summer programs are a place of resource, creativity, exploration, friendship and expression for children ages 3-5 years old. Young children gather on farm land daily with their mentors to be inspired to learn and co-create through activities related to movement, ancestral skills, Earth tending, art, imagination, and music.

Served as a Youth Specialist assigned to the Youth in Development project, which was created to prepare and engage youth in rural communities to lead healthy lives and become active citizens, as well as strengthen community support for youth.

Worked with students ages eight to eighteen, teaching positive decision-making and goal-setting skills. Ran the Tutoring Program at the Center, provided supports to help build academic competency and resiliency in youth.

Greater New Orleans Area

Facilitated 8-week social skills groups for children ages four to eight, based on the Incredible Years Small Group Dinosaur Curriculum, which has been found effective in improving children’s social emotional competence, emotion regulation, school readiness and reducing behavior problems. During my internship, I oversaw groups of approximately six students per week. The groups are designed to teach children to recognize and identify emotions in themselves and others, and allow for opportunities to practice appropriate ways to interact with peers, manage their emotions and solve problems.

Greater New Orleans Area

For the Children is a Tulane program that assists schools in the New Orleans area. I worked at two different schools (Banneker Elementary and Lawrence D. Crocker College Prep) as a kindergarten classroom assistant. Along with monitoring classroom behavior and grading assignments, I led small groups/interventions in Reading, Math, and ELL. I also aided in the assessment of reading, math and language skills. During the spring semester of 2015, I helped with data collection and input of behavioral progress monitoring for Lawrence D. Crocker College Prep.

I served as an English Learning Partner for Tibetan Refugees in Northern India. I worked with refugees focusing on English oral, reading, and writing skills. I also worked with children from the slum community in Northern India, teaching and facilitating conversation about healthiness and emotional wellbeing. At the Deer Park Institute in Bir, India I engaged in activities associated with preservation ecology and Zero Waste. I participated in discourse about how to bring mindful waste management techniques to the community.

I participated in and was a counselor at numerous National Hispanic Institute Summer Programs across the country. The programs focus on teaching legislative processes and leadership skills to junior high and high school students. With NHI, I served as a Latina mentor for young, college-bound Latinx students from the United States, México, Panamá, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Spain.
