  • The Old Church
    Director
The Old Church Jul 2014 - Oct 2016
The Old Church is a unique arts and performance space in an historic church building in Stoke Newington, Hackney, dedicated to inspiring arts and inspiring community. As first Director of The Old Church, I developed it from a volunteer-run project to a professional organisation, with sustainable income streams, professional staff, a network of local partnerships and a strong artistic programme. The programme included jazz (Norma Winstone), classical (Fitzwilliam Quartet), folk (Helen Chadwick) and rock (Wreckless Eric, Mick Head), plus regular all-age community art workshops, daytime gigs for parents & little ones and showcases of emerging singer-songwriting talent. In Feb-March 2016, I produced and directed the venue's first festival, BREATHE: a celebration of air. This was a month-long programme of original artistic commissions (including Karine Polwart, Bishi, Ansuman Biswas, Candoco Dance), a community art project, interfaith gatherings and daily meditation, based around the installation of a multi-sensory wind harp, by Output Arts. The festival was funded by Arts Council England and Near Neighbours, and involved 47 artists, 12 community organisations and an audience of 2500.
