Profile bio

About Rachel Slade

I am an editor, journalist, screenwriter, producer, and author of dozens of works that explore issues around entrepreneurship, leadership, public policy, and economics.I've spent 17 years in media and communications, first at Boston magazine, most recently as the editor of the Ideas section at the Boston Globe. During that time, I have worked with researchers, writers, and design teams to produce widely read pieces tied to the news cycle, engineered to inform and engage readers. I have nurtured colleagues, helping them hone their interviewing, data collection, and journalism skills to broaden inquiries, identify key issues on which we can have the greatest impact through reporting and storytelling, and refine written content to ensure that it is engaging and accurate. As a journalist, I have won several national awards. My two-part story about Boston’s secretive planning and development agency which ran in Boston Magazine won two awards in civic journalism and laid the groundwork for Mayor Michelle Wu’s sweeping reforms to the Boston’s planning processes. My first book, Into the Raging Sea, about the American cargo ship El Faro which sank in 2015 in the Bermuda Triangle, was a NYT Notable Book and received the Maine Literary Award for Nonfiction and the Mountbatten Award. My most recent book, Making It in America: The Almost Impossible Quest to Manufacture in the U.S.A. (and How it Got That Way) (Pantheon, 1/24), is a narrative nonfiction work that blends a deeply reported entrepreneurial case study with an analysis of the political decisions that led to the disinvestment of domestic industry in the United States. As a documentary producer at RadicalMedia, I researched and crafted several successful pitches and screenplays that led to completed projects, including the four-hour, two-part documentary, “The Great War,” which aired on the History Channel on Memorial Day, 2024; and “The League,” a documentary about the Negro League directed by Sam Pollard.I credit my success to my ability to collaborate with myriad stakeholders, strategize and assign important and timely projects, and identify potential partners for fruitful collaborations.

Listed skills include Journalism, Social Media, Photoshop, Editorial, and 26 others.
