I'm a graphic designer and illustrator based in Perth, Western Australia.My experience spans more than twenty years in the fields of advertising, publications, brand design, illustration and web design. A ten-year stint as editorial artist and then Weekend Magazine art director at The West Australian newspaper widened my skill set, trained me to work to tight deadlines, and even gave me the opportunity to hone my writing skills after I hounded the travel editor for assignments! An English Literature degree helped, and it's also been invaluable in helping me becoming a better designer – communication is the key with graphic design, so a good grasp of language is essential.My current role is Designer & Production Manager at yStop, an outdoor advertising company with contracts in the councils of Stirling, Canning, Joondalup and more. From static and illuminated large format advertising, we're now moving into the digital sphere which is exciting.Meanwhile I've also freelanced as a designer and illustrator for many years, but limit myself to projects that inspire me!This is an exciting time to be a designer. When I started out, spray glue, markers and scalpels were still part of a designer's tool set. The advent of computers revolutionised the profession of graphic design, and now AI promises to do the same. The Adobe software suite is already streamlining tasks with AI.Am I worried that AI will make graphic designers redundant? Not in the slightest! Because the real art of a good designer lies in interpreting what a client needs.
