Rural Family Health EducatorPeace Corps Jun 2018 - Mar 2020Belize• Lived and served a village of 4,000 people in northern Belize. Facilitated health projects to villagers at the clinic, primary school, conducted home visits, and established and maintained community garden. Addressed issues including non-communicable disease prevention, good hygiene practice, and nutrition.• Facilitated public health lessons to more than 400 primary school students. Designed and implemented demonstrations and strategies to encourage healthy living as part of the national Health and Family Life Education (HFLE) curriculum.• Co-planned weekly home visits in coordination with the local Community Health Worker (CHW) and Belize Ministry of Health. Conducted surveys with villagers to collect health census information and measure knowledge about mosquito-borne illnesses. Organized monthly home visits to 12 diabetic villagers as part of a Ministry of Health initiative over a period of 7 months. Recorded their weight, blood pressure, and blood sugar on each visit and planned short health talks about diet and exercise, Body Mass Index (BMI) management, and stressed importance of health maintenance for diabetics.• Organized a community health fair in conjunction with the Ministry of Health, Community Health Workers (CHWs), and local clinic staff. Coordinated with CHW to design health posters and lead discussions on non-communicable disease prevention including anti-tobacco messages, the effects of exercise on the body, and delivered information about Chronic Kidney Disease.• Implemented a school garden in the community that sold produce at low-cost to villagers. Founded a school Garden Club that assisted in turning soil, forming beds, planting, watering, and harvesting produce. Led hands-on and informational sessions about nutrition and horticultural skills. Facilitated at-home gardening sessions for interested villagers to encourage personal control of healthy food options. -
