About Rachel Simrell Scott

Originally trained as an architect, I now harness those skills working where design meets technology, marketing design services to both businesses and consumers. My formal education includes a Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) from the University of Oregon, and a Bachelor of Arts (B.A) in Art History & Visual Culture Studies from Whitman College. Informally, I am constantly learning, and have a bit of an obsession with absorbing online courses at 2x speed. At Board & Vellum – an integrated architecture, interior design, and landscape architecture firm in Capitol Hill, Seattle – I lead all our marketing efforts, helping grow our company from a firm of 13 dedicated individuals to an engaged team of nearly 50. Beyond my role in marketing strategy, I harness my training in design thinking to iterate on organizational management, firm structure, business development, branding, marketing, social media, content strategy, content design & production, business operations, and the development & cultivation of our award-winning firm culture. In 2019, we celebrated our fourth consecutive year as one of Seattle Business magazine's list of 100 Best Companies to Work For in Washington State. Board & Vellum is a case study for how a design firm can be both successful and a great place to work. When you love your work, it feels like play. When I shift gears from Board & Vellum, I put on my hat at Emerald Seven, an award-winning interdisciplinary design, web development, and content studio I co-founded with my partner, Blake Scott. As our design and tech laboratory, Emerald Seven is our space for exploring new technologies and geeking out with selective integrative design projects. Currently, we are building a React + Apollo version of our award-winning E7 Series 3 platform. To explore the work I’ve designed and built over the years with my teammates, have a peek at our portfolio at emeraldseven.com. And, of course, please check out the work from our awesome team at Board & Vellum, at boardandvellum.com. Should you be interested in partnering with or hiring us for any projects you're excited about, please reach out!

  • Board & Vellum
    Director Of Visual Design
    Board & Vellum Sep 2017 - Sep 2019
    Seattle, Washington, Us
This multifaceted role encompassed the direction, management, strategy, and production of many short and long-term projects to guide the marketing and branding of a growing company, including visual design, graphics, content strategy, content design & production, and the design and implementation of systems to streamline our operations and firm structure. As the tech-nerdiest member of our marketing team, most broadly, my greatest mission was to lead the digital transformation of the company. My first large project was to complete the content design and production for our new website, launched at boardandvellum.com in November 2017. Post-launch, I continued to actively design, curate, produce, and edit the written and visual content, as well as manage the site itself.I also designed, codified, and launched Board & Vellum's first-ever Brand Guidelines. This involved not only defining the appropriate use of the existing brand assets, but designing ways to integrate existing and expanded brand media into new media contexts, supporting its integration into revised and updated digital and physical marketing collateral, defining the brand voice, and the brand philosophy. Harnessing this defined brand identity, I redesigned the company's social media strategy, building an organic, engaged, and personally-invested audience of followers across multiple channels. In 2018, we also soft-launched a brand studio at Board & Vellum, offering branding and identity services in-house, integrated with our architecture, interior design, and landscape architecture teams.Across my role, from projects both digital and physical, my efforts helped lead the company through its growth from a small, up-and-coming, start-up firm, to a growing, medium-sized, award-winning architecture and design firm in the Pacific Northwest.
  • Board & Vellum
    Project Associate: Brand, Graphics
    Board & Vellum May 2017 - Sep 2017
    Seattle, Washington, Us
In the spring of 2017, I took the leap to shift my career path from architecture to branding, graphics, and marketing. Fortunately, I was able to do so at a fantastic company that supported my career shift by accepting my proposal to create a brand new position at the firm. In that role, I began the effort to raise the bar on our public-facing graphic output, beginning with the content design and production for our new website.
  • Board & Vellum
    Project Associate: Architecture
    Board & Vellum Sep 2015 - May 2017
    Seattle, Washington, Us
Our close-knit team of five focused on single-family residential projects: remodels and new construction. Beginning ideation with hand sketches on trace paper, we later moved into a 3D modeling / BIM software (REVIT), as we shepherded projects from Schematic Design through Construction Observation. Throughout the process, we were our clients' advocates, helping bring architectural success to projects large and small. In addition to our commitments to our clients, each of us at Board & Vellum takes on a "championship" role within the organization. Until September 2016, I served as "Web/Tech Champion," managing content for our existing website, boardandvellum.com; coordinating an editorial calendar, content strategy, and editorial oversight for the B&V Blog; and consulting on new technologies that we may incorporate into our operations. During that tenure, beyond iterations to the website, my successes included our company's adoption of Slack and Airtable, helping to streamline and modernize our operations.
