The Desmond Tutu TB center focuses on grassroots research, which includes work being done in communities, investigations of the everyday problems experienced by sufferers of TB and HIV/AIDS. As a Laboratory Technologist I am involved in ongoing studies related to TB under the department of Paediatrics and Child Health. I am occupied at the Brooklyn Chess Hospital DTTC clinical study unit as a research laboratory technologist running its laboratory. I perform functional duties on various studies, which include:Assisting with processing, storing and transporting biological research samples (e.g. blood, sputum, serum and urine).Receive and deliver details for further processing of samples through external microbiological or laboratory analysts.Providing procedure-specific training on all aspects of laboratory work.Developing and maintaining standard operation procedures (SOPs).Performing quality control of blood, plasma, study samples, environmental checking and documentation.Serve as primary liaison between receiving laboratories (UCT, BARC and the DTTC) and the BCH PK Unit.Conducting regular stocktaking and ensuring that sufficient materials are available for the required lab analyses at all times.Provide administrative support to the clinical research team, including data capturing (all lab-related as well as some clinical data).Maintaining laboratory equipment on site.Monitoring temperature and record temperature readings on site.Ensuring site compliance with all regulatory procedures regarding laboratories.Quality control on documentation and samples.Service management, procurement, calibartions and validation of lab equipment and material. Providing feedback to Paediatrics management and other stakeholders.All the work I do is based off training completed as per GCLP, GCP and IATA certifications amongst other study specific training.

As a microbiologist, I performed the following functions:Daily procedures would include standard operations of the laboratory, equipment, temperature and maintenance verification and micro processing of client samples.I have gathered a strong grounding on environmental checks as I am competent in calibration weighing, pH and conductivity devices, temperature mapping of incubators and fridges, sterility checks, handling of autoclaves and filtration units and various other equipment checks.Concerning microbiology practice, I am able to process client samples by dilution inoculation, preparing agar and broth media, test for enrichment bacteria, chromatography readings, process mesophilic and thermophilic spores, spread and pour plate bacterial tests, filtration of liquid samples, micro-colony counts and analyse microbial control systems.
