Outreach for persons experiencing homelessness in particular assigned neighborhoods of the city Santa Cruz.

I led a team of 2 employees and 3 volunteers in doing outreach for unhoused veterans. We would respond to police calls and other providers in the county would call us and we would go directly to the veteran and start the process to get them into transitional housing or emergency shelters and into permanent housing. We worked closely with VASH and SSVF and the Contiuum of Care network of providers and documented everything in HMIS.Our speciality was filling in the gaps of services that the VA and county agencies could not always provide-- such as, now that the veteran is in the car, where is he is she going to sleep tonight? I began placing veterans at county campgrounds and providing tents and sleeping bags as a legal alternative to hotels. We would pick them up the next morning and drive them to all their appointments and at the end of the day return them to the campground, which had a shower and bathroom, and a fire pit to cook on. Then other agencies who had grant funding for hotel stays would take over, typically after a move in date for an apartment was secured.After a couple years, we had participated in housing so many veterans that we started providing a lot of homeless retention and prevention case management-- as anyone in this field knows, it takes a village to house one person and even a bigger village to keep them housed!

Supervising clients who recently were released from jail or prison while they completed 25 hours of community service over the period of 5 to 6 months. Often we would walk dogs or feed bunny rabbits at the animal shelters or pull weeds from the community garden or pick up trash at the park. But mostly it was about connecting on a human level with people who were facing the challenges of returning back into society after incarceration.

Basic training/bootcamp at Fort Jackson, Advanced individual training (A.I.T.) at Ft. Jackson. 1st duty station: Soule, South Korea, worked in a mechanics shop changing out humvee engines. Special assignment to a detail where myself and one other soldier were responsible for recovering and turning in 10 million dollars of equipment. 2nd duty station: Fort Irwin. National Training Center (N.T.C.) Two week desert acclimation training rotations every month with deploying units; we role played opposing force for units deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan.
